The article titled “Leader Emergence in Nascent Venture Teams: The Critical Roles of Individual Emotion Regulation and Team Emotions” by Charlotta Sirén, Vivianna Fang He, Henrik Wesemann, Zoe Jonassen, Dietmar Grichnik and Georg von Krogh was accepted for publication in the Journal of Management Studies.
In this article, the authors show how the ability to regulate one’s emotion influences who is perceived as a leader in nascent venture teams. They also find that the link between emotion regulation (the ability to regulate one’s emotions) and leader emergence is dependent on the team emotions present in the team (positive vs. negative team emotions). Their findings suggest that instead of suppressing one’s emotions, it is beneficial for entrepreneurs who aspire to become leaders in nascent ventures to stay authentic by expressing and re-appraising their genuine emotions. In particular, this is important when the team faces challenges that evoke negative team emotions.
